Don't Knock It Till You Try It: Lengua (Beef Tongue)

Considered to be one of the most vile looking items at the grocery store, beef tongue is the most underappreciated part of the cow outside of the Hispanic population.  It looks like a large slug, and looks even worse vacuum packed.  But, beef tongue is actually delicious.  Surprisingly delicious.  And it's my job to convince you to give it a try.

Beef tongue or lengua, has been prepared and consumed for centuries in North and South America.  In early days, many believed in using all parts of an animal, so the tongue became a source of food for this reason.  Most commonly seen in street taco stands all over the world, lengua has become a favorite among some of the greatest chefs in the world.  Just ask Anthony Bourdain.  It is best served in a corn tortilla with chopped onions, cilantro, and avocado.  Add a dab of hot sauce, and you are in business.  But I must warn you, do not give any lengua to your dog.  They will get sick, my dearly departed chihuahua Nico got sick once eating lengua, but she survived.  I assure lengua is fantastic.  If you have ever had barbacoa, there is a good chance you have already had it. Surprise!

So, how is it prepared?  The way I start preparing it is to boil it in a gallon boiling pot of water for 4 hours.  This makes the meat tender, and also makes the lengua juicier.  You then remove the lengua from the pot and slice it into quarter inch portions.  You then take a skillet, add a slight amount of vegetable oil, and cook the slices of lengua in light medium heat.  Once cooked, you can consume the lengua sliced, diced, or just in the portion you cooked in the skillet.  It it as the main course of a dinner.  Try it as a delicious taco.  Put it in your sandwich. Beef tongue tastes great.  I think everyone should try it.  Except your dog.  But you as a human being who loves trying new things......give lengua a try.

Places I Love: Kreuz Market

I am a proud Texan.  And like any Texan, I love BBQ.  In my early life, the only BBQ I knew came from Bill Miller's Barbecue.  I love Bill Miller's, but as I got older, I wanted to try BBQ outside of my hometown of San Antonio.  There are some really great BBQ joints in the Alamo City, but two of my best friends took me to the Mecca of BBQ.  This Mecca is called Lockhart, TX.  Orlando Garza and Jason Herrera......thank you for introducing me to this amazing town.

I first visited Lockhart back in 2001.  It was a month after the 9/11 tragedy, and everyone was pretty shaken up.  To lift our spirits, my friends and I decided to go to Shiner, Texas for the annual Bocktober Fest at the Spoetzel Brewery.  So Lando, Jason, and I decided to stop in Lockhart for lunch.  There was a place Jason always talked about having the best BBQ in the world.  Lando concurred with Jason, so how was I to say no.  Remember, my BBQ experience was limited.  We roll into Lockhart, and I like what I see.  Great small town.  Everyone there is nice. We pull up into a place called Kreuz Market.  My taste buds were about to be blown away.

Lando, Jason, and I walk through the doors of Kreuz Market to the most amazing smell ever.  I look at their huge wooden menu leading to the main counter, and I'm like a kid in a candy store.  Lando turns to me ans says " order half a pound of lean, a hot, and a chop."  Let me interpret this for you:
Half a pound of Lean= half a pound of shoulder clod
a hot= sausage link
a chop= a pork chop (a thick pork chop)
Added some German potatoes and pinto beans, and we were in business.
I ordered exactly what Lando told me to order.  Jason also explained to me that the BBQ at Kreuz was so good that it didn't need BBQ sauce.  Besides, it says don't ask for sauce on the menu.  After one bite, I was hooked.  It was amazing.  It was simply the best BBQ I have ever had.  And I can still make that statement today.

I still go to Kreuz Market today.  I go every other month with my friends Paul, Rich, and Moses.  Like myself, they are crazy about Kreuz.  Everything that comes out of their massive BBQ pits is gold.  The sausage is perfect. The brisket and shoulder clod are delectable.  Try anything on their menu.  It's food nirvana.  Lockhart is an hour away from San Antonio, and it is well worth the trip.  There are a handful of great BBQ places there.  For my money.....KREUZ MARKET is KING!  Try the beef ribs, they are killer.

Legendary Menu Items: Fish and Gravy from Golden Star Cafe

In San Antonio, there are restaurants known for certain dishes on their menu.  Bud Jones is known for having the largest enchiladas in town.  Lulu's Cafe is known for their giant cinnamon rolls.  Big Lou's has the 42 inch pizza which you probably need at least 6 people for an attempt to finish. Jim's is known for their tortilla soup.  But the mention of Golden Star Cafe draws one response.  It is almost automatic.  Its an item that has become its trademark.  Nothing says Golden Star Cafe more than......Fish and Gravy.  No really.  Fish and Gravy is legendary.

For 85 years, Golden Star Cafe has been rocking the downtown area of San Antonio with a menu full of excellent Chinese, Mexican, and seafood cuisine.  But one item on their menu has become a local legend.  Fish and Gravy may sound unusual, but is delicious beyond words.  Three hearty and breaded fish fillets covered in brown gravy with a side of fries draws alot of positive reviews from critics and patrons alike.  It is the only thing I order from The Golden Star.  I have seriously not tried anything else, and I have been going there since I was 3.  That's 40 years.  And I am not the only one.  It is the flagship of the Golden Star.  Thousands of foodies love this item.  Mention Golden Star, and Fish and Gravy always is the response that follows.

Fish and Gravy has to be tried to be believed.   It is truly on my top three dishes I love to order.  I know people who have it in their number one spot.  Maybe one day I will try something else on the menu at Golden Star, but for now, I am sticking with Fish and Gravy.  When I think about it, I must have ordered this dish about 425 times.  Hopefully all of you out there give it a try.  It's simply awesome.

Alamo City Food Landmark: BUD JONES Family Restaurant

We have all been in the situation where you bare part of a group of hungry people who can't decide where to go dine for the evening.  It happens to the average person on a regular basis.  I came across this problem today.  In my case, it didn't take long to come up with a restaurant everyone could agree on.  I had an ace card, and it never fails me.  BUD JONES Family Restaurant is the great problem solver.  It is also an Alamo City Food Landmark.

What makes Bud Jones so great?  You can't turn it down.  It's a dining choice that conjures up an automatic yes.  Southside San Antonio is full of  local favorite eateries, but Bud Jones is its crowning jewel.  The popular restaurant has been serving San Antonio favorites for 60 years.  It is located at 1440 SW  Military Drive.  The menu at Bud Jones is one of the most diverse in the city.  Items such as their all you can eat fish, largest enchiladas in town, and their trademark large chicken fried steak have a huge line forming at their doors. When I  go, I always see another patron dining who I had seen there before.  Saying Bud Jones is popular is an understatement.

What makes Bud Jones successful is that the employees make you feel like family.  They give you a reason to keep coming back.  Great food served by great people.  People who go for the first time fall in love with the place.  My Mother loves their fried mushrooms.  My best friend loves their burgers.  I love the chicken fried steak, and it is served with a smile.  San Antonians love this restaurant.  The prices are good, and there is a alot of space for everyone to dine.  There is no wonder why the word family is on their lighted sign.  Family is what they are all about.

If you have never been to Bud Jones, you owe it to yourself to go.  Any occasion is perfect to go there.  There are not many restaurants that have have been around as long as they have, but Bud Jones is a legendary food stop.  It is also one of the few restaurants open til midnight a couple days out of the week, and I am cool with that.  So, grab the kids, jump in the car, and head over to Bud Jones.  Order the onion rings.  They are delicious.  You will fall in love with the place.

Places I Love: Minnano Japanese Grocery

I work at a grocery store, and I am amazed at how many different items we carry.  But, my store does not have many international food items.  Especially Japanese items.  In many cases, the only Japanese item you will see at a supermarket is the frosted cookie sticks called Pocky. Luckily there is a place in San Antonio that is your one stop shop for what you seek that is Japanese.  Minnano Japanese Grocery is a delight for foodies, otakus, and others looking to try something new.

Minnano Japanese Grocery is located at 7460 Callaghan Rd.a little past Fredericksburg Rd.  I am there twice a week to buy udon noodles, mochi, Pocky, and takoyaki.  Takoyaki is a wheat battered dumpling containing octopus meat.  Don't knock it till you try it.  The friendly staff at Minnano are the treasure of this shop.  Many times I have had questions about certain items that are new to me, and they have always had an answer.  The staff has also introduced new items that would be to my liking.  They have so much to offer.  They have everything from Japanese beauty products to clothing to a diverse selection of food items.  It is my number one stop for snacks.  If I am going on a road trip, I am stopping at Minnano first.

Minnano is also known for having food tastings, cooking classes, and open house like events.  If you want to learn how to make sushi, you can learn there at one of their events.  They are always introducing new items on Facebook, and their profile on the social media site has many followers.  I have taken friends to the shop, and they have felt a little intimidated.  Once inside, they fell in love with Minnano.  Every week I have my grocery list just for Minnano Japanese Grocery.  They are always fully stocked with everything I need.  It's like going on a little vacation walking through the shop's doors.  And as always, at checkout I always buy my green tea mochi.  Their mochi has a doughy outer surface with and ice cream like stuffing.  Heaven on earth as my best friend called upon trying it for the first time.  So, if you really appreciate Japanese culture and are looking to further explore that interest;  Come down to Minnano Japanese Grocery for a delightful experience.  And don't forget the mochi on the way out.

Dine-In Flashback: Gladys Knight's and Ron Winans' Chicken and Waffles

I am a huge wrestling fan.  In 2011, a had the opportunity to attend my first Wrestlemania in Atlanta, Georgia.  My friends and I were already planning to hit up restaurants we heard were amazing there.  One in particular we were super excited about.  Gladys Knight & Ron Winan's Chicken and Waffles was on top of our list of eats in Atlanta.  Everywhere we went was great, Gladys Knight & Ron Winan's Chicken and Waffles was on a whole different level.  It is one of the only dining experiences where I was left speechless.  I ordered the Uncle Ron's Platter from their stellar menu, and it was the best fried chicken I have ever had.  This plate had 3 pieces of dark meat fried chicken, sweet corn, okra, and the best cornbread on the planet.  I still talk about that plate 7 years later.

Wrestlemania wasn't very good, but all the eats in Atlanta were amazing.  Gladys Knight & Ron Winan's Chicken and Waffles is a must for anyone that appreciates soul food.  If you are ever in Atlanta, go there.  Their menu has something for everyone.  You have to get the cornbread.  If I could I would catch the midnight train to Georgia for another Uncle Ron's Platter.

Alamo City Food Landmark: BURGER BOY

In Texas, the majority of people say Whataburger is king of burgers in Texas.  That fact I do not debate.  I do debate if Whataburger is the king in San Antonio.  There are many great burger joints in the Alamo City.  Chris Madrid's has been a staple for years.  Chunky's was featured on Travel Channel's MAN VS. FOOD.  Chester's Burgers is a word of mouth favorite.  For my money, there is only one clear choice for the best burgers in San Antonio.  Burger Boy is an ALAMO CITY FOOD LANDMARK.

What makes Burger Boy so great?  Easy, their burgers taste amazing.  They have only five burgers on their menu, and they are all delicious.  Add bacon and cheese, and it only gets better.  Since 1985, Burger Boy has been serving up burger bliss to the patrons of its St. Marys St. location.  It has a simple menu full of tasty items.  One of its trademark items is the Orange Freeze.  This slush drink goes perfect with whatever you order.  When you do order, You have 3 burger options:

Bates Special: Single patty burger with fries and regular drink    $5.99

Working Man Special: Double Burger Boy with fries and large drink     $7.99

Sup'r Man Special (non-menu item): Triple Burger Boy with fries and large drink     $9.99

They also have chicken and fish burgers that are very good.  Their hot dogs are delicious.  They also have award winning shakes.  My favorite is the Orange shake with sprinkles.  Everything coming out of this place is great.  Though the building is very small, droves of Burger Boy faithful come to get their hands on these legendary burgers.  I myself go once or twice a week.  Soon I will not being going so far to get my usual Working Man Special thanks to a second location opening up near my house off Potranco Rd. and Hunt Lane.

Burger Boy satisfies appetites and brings smiles.  I urge anyone who appreciates a great hamburger to make their way to Burger Boys.  It's old school burgers done right by great people. Give it a try.  You will love it.

Foodie Paradise: 2018 Asian Festival San Antonio

Valentine's day is coming up, and as usual I will not be celebrating this day.  It is three days later that I am excited about.  Every February in San Antonio, Asian Festival takes place.  This festival is a foodies dream.  So many types of  awesome food delights are showcased at this great matsuri (Japanese for festival).  I always want to try a little of everything.  For those who have never been to this event, there are a few things you need to know.

The Asian Festival is held at UTSA Institute Of Texan Cultures.  This cultural preservation museum is also the home of Folklife Festival which I will get to in the coming months.  It is just a stone's throw away from the Alamodome.  Tickets can be purchased online or at the festival.  It is cheaper online.  There is alot of parking around the festival, but some of these lots only take cards. The festivities start at 10 AM, but you may want to get there a little early since it does get packed early.  I will list all the other info you need at the end of this article.  There is so much to look at once you are there.  There are a few big stages for dance groups and musicians.  Be on the lookout for the Chinese Lion Dance group.  They are awesome.

Once you are through the gates, You are in for so much fun.  There are so many food booths there, so take the map offered at the gate.  Every year, the first booth I go to is the Thai booth.  They have boba tea.  I usually don't eat breakfast before I go, so boba tea is great to start off with.  I wait an hour, maybe check out the musical performances in the main building.  Then, I start sampling alot.  Among my favorites are spam musubi from the Hawaiian booth, anything from the Filipino booth, chicken tandori from the Pakistani booth, BBQ from the Korean booth, and Pho from the Vietnamese booth.  I wish I could get to every booth, but my stomach can't handle everything.  The booths do not take cash, so go to a ticket booth to purchase tickets for food.  All booths have tickets per item listed.  There are ticket booths all over the festival.

The amount of food at the festival is staggering.  It may difficult to make up your mind about what you want to try.  But that is a good problem to have.  Bring your kids, this is a very family friendly environment.  Here is some important information if you are interested in going.  Hope to see you there.

Asian Festival 2018                       Tickets: Adults $10 purchased online/ $12 at gate

Hidden Gems: Taqueria Ricardo's Food Truck

I love food trucks.  They present a bounty of delicious standards and new foods that are great.  They are hip and usually inexpensive.  There is one taco truck that is serving up Mexican gold.  Taqueria Ricardo's is a food truck that masters the art of the street taco.  Street tacos are small, but this taco truck packs it with flavor.  I have tried every item on the menu, and I see why people from all walks of life are coming for what Taqueria Ricardo's has to offer.

So, what should you order when you get there?  I offer a few suggestions.  I mix up my ordering from week to week.  At times I order 4 beef street tacos with cilantro and onion, one pork quesadilla, and a Mexican Coca-Cola. Costs about 9 bucks.  Well worth it.  My favorite item on their menu is the APACHE. 7 mini street tacos with different meets, sauteed onions, avocado, and lime.  The Apache is pure bliss.  I think I have ordered this item over 30 times.  The tortas they offer are great, and they make an amazing order of nachos with refried beans, guacamole, nacho cheese, and pico de gallo.  And their big burrito is worth a try. Their green and red salsas are amazing. Everything on the menu is decently priced.

So, where can you find Taqueria Ricardo's in San Antonio?  They can be found in front of the O'Reillys auto parts store on Potranco Rd,
right before you hit N Ellison Drive.  The truck usually gets to its location around 6 PM, and stays till 11 PM.  On weekends they sometimes stay open till midnight.  They accept cash, debit, and credit cards.  They are very friendly.  Try it and you will probably be coming back for more street tacos on a regular basis.  I do.

Places I Love: SARKU Japan

After the closing of the Malthouse, I was in search of a go to restaurant.  Somewhere I wouldn't have to think twice about going to when I got hungry.  I took me a while to find such a place.  I just didn't think I would find this place.....at Ingram Park Mall.  The food court has been an American staple in shopping malls since the 1980's.  They have featured such popular eateries such as Chic Fil A, Orange Julius, Sbarro, and McDonalds. But, at the food court at Ingram Park Mall, there is one undisputed favorite.  Sarku Japan has been cooking up Japanese fare for mall shoppers since 1987.  Easily the longest line in the food court, its menu of simple Japanese staples has made it a go to spot for foodies.  I love this place.  Small menu, but all the items on that menu are great.  I found myself going to Sarku Japan twice a week.  I get asked why do always go to that Japanese place at the mall by my friends.  The answer is their amazing chicken teriyaki.  Considered simple food in Tokyo, Sarku Japan's chicken teriyaki is food gold.  I always get double meat when I order up at Sarku, and it is worth it.  For about $9, I get a huge portion of chicken teriyaki, fried rice, and steamed vegetables.  That is all I ever get from Sarku, but it is now my go to place.  Their pork dumplings and spring rolls are great too.  The guys behind the counter are very friendly, and they never forget a face.  I love the fact that you get to see them cook your order.  How can something so simple be so good?  It's comfort food.  Just ask the 20 people in line at Sarku Japan.  I highly recommend this Asian delight at the Ingram Park Mall food court.  You will get addicted. I guarantee.

Goodbye Malthouse! Why did you have to go?

As far as I can remember, My parents took me to eat at places they ate at as kids.  They were mostly neighborhood Mom and Pop places.  Very inexpensive menus, and very popular.  Among the many places we ate at, The Malthouse on Zarzamora and Buena Vista in the deep Westside of my hometown of San Antonio was my favorite.  The menu had something for everyone.  The Malthouse was known for a great number of reasons.  It was founded in 1949 by German immigrants.  A worker bought the drive in years later.  It was the neighborhood eatery of the Westside.  They had mouthwatering burgers, awesome onion rings, meaty fried chicken that looked like it was on steroids, and of course their malts.  One of my favorite items on the menu was a Westside staple called the crispy dog.  A crispy dog is an all beef hot dog deep fried in a corn tortilla.  I still make them to this day.  My family and I went to the Malthouse every week.  It was on the way to my Grandma Rosa's house, so it was easy to convince my Dad to stop there.  As I got older, I went there more often.  I tried some of their other menu items.  I loved there large Mexican food plates.  But I still went for their awesome burgers.  It was my go to place.  My friends loved it.  I was its biggest fan.

In January of 2016, The Malthouse closed its doors temporarily for remodeling.  The remodeling never came to pass.  The last thing I ordered was a double cheeseburger with onion rings, a large Big Red, and my usual large strawberry malt.  My entire family used to go there.  We celebrated birthdays, promotions, and little triumphs there on many occasions.  Many of its patrons were brought to tears upon the news of its closing for good.  And like them, I feel cheated.  They were supposed to build a 7-11 in it's place.  But, the empty Malthouse is still there.  Memories surface when ever I pass by it.  Like the time my friend Albert consumed enough fried chicken, fajita tacos, and cheeseburgers to feed a family of five.  I cherish the time my uncle John and I put our resources together to give my cousin Maggie the best birthday dinner ever.  My favorite memories are when I would bring my grandma Rosa Malthouse onion rings.  Her favorite.

No other eatery can ever replace the  Malthouse.  There was no place like it.  I go to BURGER BOY on ST. Mary's street just because their burgers taste like the ones from the Malthouse.  It saddens me that it is not around anymore, but life goes on. I really don't have a favorite place to eat. I'm a foodie, I eat everywhere.  But occasionally,  someone will ask me, where did I have the best burger I ever tasted.  The Malthouse , "The Pride Of The Westside."
