I am a proud Texan. And like any Texan, I love BBQ. In my early life, the only BBQ I knew came from Bill Miller's Barbecue. I love Bill Miller's, but as I got older, I wanted to try BBQ outside of my hometown of San Antonio. There are some really great BBQ joints in the Alamo City, but two of my best friends took me to the Mecca of BBQ. This Mecca is called Lockhart, TX. Orlando Garza and Jason Herrera......thank you for introducing me to this amazing town.
I first visited Lockhart back in 2001. It was a month after the 9/11 tragedy, and everyone was pretty shaken up. To lift our spirits, my friends and I decided to go to Shiner, Texas for the annual Bocktober Fest at the Spoetzel Brewery. So Lando, Jason, and I decided to stop in Lockhart for lunch. There was a place Jason always talked about having the best BBQ in the world. Lando concurred with Jason, so how was I to say no. Remember, my BBQ experience was limited. We roll into Lockhart, and I like what I see. Great small town. Everyone there is nice. We pull up into a place called Kreuz Market. My taste buds were about to be blown away.
Lando, Jason, and I walk through the doors of Kreuz Market to the most amazing smell ever. I look at their huge wooden menu leading to the main counter, and I'm like a kid in a candy store. Lando turns to me ans says " order half a pound of lean, a hot, and a chop." Let me interpret this for you:
Half a pound of Lean= half a pound of shoulder clod
a hot= sausage link
a chop= a pork chop (a thick pork chop)
Added some German potatoes and pinto beans, and we were in business.
I ordered exactly what Lando told me to order. Jason also explained to me that the BBQ at Kreuz was so good that it didn't need BBQ sauce. Besides, it says don't ask for sauce on the menu. After one bite, I was hooked. It was amazing. It was simply the best BBQ I have ever had. And I can still make that statement today.
I still go to Kreuz Market today. I go every other month with my friends Paul, Rich, and Moses. Like myself, they are crazy about Kreuz. Everything that comes out of their massive BBQ pits is gold. The sausage is perfect. The brisket and shoulder clod are delectable. Try anything on their menu. It's food nirvana. Lockhart is an hour away from San Antonio, and it is well worth the trip. There are a handful of great BBQ places there. For my money.....KREUZ MARKET is KING! Try the beef ribs, they are killer.
