JOHN EATS WORLD TURNS ONE YEAR OLD! YouTube here I come.

One year ago, I was on a two week vacation from work.  My boss accidentally did not schedule me for the next week, so I had no idea what I was going to do being off for a third consecutive week.  After a few hours of brainstorming, creating a food blog won the day.  JOHN EATS WORLD is a forum for me to tell the world why I love being a FOODIE.  I only write about the places I love, promising never to diss any eatery.  This blog has become very successful.  I feel it is now time to take this blog to YouTube.  This move has been influenced by the works of TabiEats and Paolo from Tokyo.  I will draw from the influence of Anthony Bourdain and add my quirkiness.  I am excited to announce that the JOHN EATS WORLD YouTube channel will drop on June 1st of this year.  What will you see you say?  Here are the ideas for the first five episodes.

Episode 1 :Carnivore's Paradise

Lockhart, Texas is a small town outside of the college town of San Marcos.  Lockhart is known for one thing.....World Class BBQ.  We will visit all 4 of Lockhart's legendary BBQ restaurants.  This episode will include a visit to the famous BUC-EE's travel stop.

Episode 2:  Some Legends Never Die

The Malthouse was a Westside institution.  An eatery that offered old school favorites for very low prices.  For 75 years it stood as an iconic eatery until 2016 when it closed.  In 2019, has it returned? We will look into the resurrection of the much loved MALTHOUSE CAFE.

Episode 3:  Welcome to San Antonio.  Home of  the World's Best Barbacoa.

No one does Barbacoa like San Antonio.  There are more molinos in San Antonio than any other city in the country.  I will take you to some of my favorite molinos in the Alamo City, including one that doubles as a karaoke bar.  It must be seen to be believed.

Episode 4:  SAN ANTONIO ASIAN FESTIVAL 2019

One of my favorite days of the year.  A cool cultural festival featuring food from all over Asia.  Why is lumpia the world's perfect food, and why Korean BBQ is so addictive?  I give you a tour of Asian food heaven.

Episode 5:  Food At A Rock Festival

I am headed to the Rockville Rock Festival to show you what to do about food if you are camping out at a music festival for 3 days.  What not to bring, and what is a must bring, I tell all with my cousins there to rock.  Raise your devil horns and lets eat.

I want to thank everyone who has read my blog.  The first year was amazing, and the new year will have alot of cool things happening.  Keep reading, and I will keep exploring.

Ramen made a killing in the food market in 2018

Over the last 35 years, we have looked at ramen as a dish that in Japan is great cuisine that is a quick eat in the USA.  It was thought for a while that only Japan had great ramen, and that the ramen in America was a noodle square that you boiled in water for ten minutes.  In 2018, Japanese quality ramen became a regular in the United States.  Foodies are lining up for what the noodle bars popping up everywhere have to offer.

It was thought that Pho was a huge threat to ramen in the food market, and for a little while it was.  Pho was a healthy alternative at a fraction at the price of ramen.  But, flavor wins all.  Ramen eateries started offering Japanese style bowls of ramen such as Shoyu, Tonkotsu, and spicy Miso to much fanfare.  These bowls of ramen introduced America to visually appealing naruto-maki or fish cake.  American noodle bars started to look like ramen bars in Shinjuku.

Two weeks ago, I took a couple of old high school friends to a ramen eatery that I have reviewed on this blog called NAMA RAMEN located in the Northwest side of San Antonio.  They were huge fans of Pho, but had never tried traditional Japanese ramen.  I advised them to try the Shoyu ramen which has pork belly and a chicken/soy broth.  The bowl also had a soft boiled egg,  naruto-maki, seaweed, and green onions.  After one try, they fell in love with Shoyu ramen.  It was packed with flavor, was filling, and hit the spot.  My friend Paul was surprised how good the ajitama or spiced soft boiled egg was.  Paul is not a big fan of eggs, and loved how the yolk had the texture of mashed potatoes.  Needless to say they want to go back.

Ramen is both great cuisine and a comfort food.  It offers alot of flavor for an affordable price.  It is my go to food when I can  not decide what to have for dinner.  It is great for a gathering of friends.  It is a food trend that is here to stay. Find your local ramen noodle bar, and order a bowl with extra naruto-maki.  Trust me you will love it

JOLLIBEE Is Coming To San Antonio

Houston is the home to the only JolliBee in Texas.  So, you can imagine how many JolliBee fans would make the pilgrimage to Texas' largest city to get their hands on their juicy fried chicken. rice with gravy, and delicious burgers.  Not long from now, there will be a second JolliBee in Texas.  San Antonio, which has a large Filipino population will be the home of the new JolliBee.  If you have never been to JolliBee, you owe it to yourself to give it a try.  It has something for everyone.  I always get the fried chicken.  It is delicious.  Great customer service, and a great menu.  From what I heard, the new JolliBee will be located at Lohman's Village which is close to Loop 410 and Evers Road.  The countdown is on.

Japan's Cherry Blossom Season brings on SAKURA COCA-COLA

As spring approaches, travelers from all around converge all over Japan to witness the blossoming of beautiful cherry blossoms.  This popular event is celebrated with festivals and parades.  Coca-Cola commerates cherry blossom season with their seasonal Sakura Coco-Cola.  It comes in a very decorative aluminum bottle with cherry blossom artwork all over it.  The soda itself is a cherry cola with a hint of vanilla.  Very delicious, yet pricier than your regular Coca-Cola.  It is usually only around for 3 months, but is worth a try. And....you might end up saving the bottle.

SHASTA SODA COMPANY TURNS 130 YEARS OLD

Speaking of soda,  the Shasta Soda Company turns 130 years old this year.  I know, alot of you have never heard of Shasta, but I assure you that Shasta sodas are top notch.  A huge drink staple in the 70's and 80's, Shasta has offered consumers great quality soft drinks at a fraction of the price.  I love Shasta!  My favorite flavors include grape, root beer, tribal punch, and of course cola.  Like them on Facebook.  They are having a ton of giveaways this year including a years supply of their excellent soda.

2018 Food/ Drink MVP: Topo Chico

In a year of trends, old favorite Top Chico had  their best year ever.  For years, Topo Chico was Mexico's best kept secret.  Upon coming to America, it became the best selling mineral water in the U.S.A.  In 2018, Topo Chico was everywhere.  Foodies from all ethnicities fell in love with Topo Chico.  It became a healthy alternative to the sugar based beverages on the market.  Its rise in popularity is also due to being a beverage choice at taco trucks.  Topo Chico was recently purchased by Coca-Cola last year, and sales of the Mexican mineral water were up 30%.  Topo Chico is my choice for the 2018 Food/Drink MVP.

FINALLY! I made it to NAMA RAMEN.

After months of trying to find time, and convincing my friends to go, I finally made it to NAMA RAMEN in San Antonio at 6565 Babcock Rd.  Ramen shops are popping up all over town, and foodies everywhere debate which one is the best.  I can not make that judgement just yet, so I will be visiting all of them.  But, Nama Ramen is very popular in these parts, so I decided to take a gander for myself.

Pulling up to Nama Ramen, the first thing you notice is that there is going to be a wait.  The wait is not usually long.  I went with my friends Lauren and Justin, who had been to Nama twice before.  The diners who usually come to Nama are young.  Usually 18 to 35.  After a 20 minute wait, we got a table.  What struck me was that the inside of Nama looked like a skinny bar in the Shinjuku prefecture of Tokyo.  Kitchen is open with attached bar seating, and small tables in the main dining area.  The menu at Nama is actually bigger than the one featured on their website.  As an appetizer, I ordered pork belly yakitori skewers with grilled green onions.  Delicious!  The pork belly was perfectly grilled, and the green onions were sweet.  Two pork belly yakitori for $3.75?  Can't beat that.

For the main course, I ordered shoyu ramen.  It had naruto maki, soft boiled egg, chicken and soy sauce broth, sliced pork belly, woodear mushrooms, ajitama, green onion, and sesame seeds.  The serving is of decent size, and smells great.  No forks at Nama, you have to use chopsticks.  The ramen was excellent.  The egg was delicious.  Its yolk had the texture of mashed potatoes. The naruto maki was very good.  I should have added more.  The noodles were fresh, and never lost its texture.  The pork belly was great.  An excellent bowl of ramen.  It hit the spot.  I absolutely will be coming back to Nama Ramen.

Though Nama Ramen is a small place, it is a treat for the tastebuds.  Nama also offers a huge variety of sushi beautifully prepared and served.  I emphatically enjoyed my dining experience there and would advise anyone who love Asian noodles to give Nama Ramen a try.  It's a cozy atmosphere with great service.  Slurp away at Nama Ramen!  You will want to come back.  I am.

Get your Harajuku dessert at KUMA

After leaving Hometown Burger, I wanted dessert.  I normally don't do dessert.  I have been doing well staying in shape, but I saw a sign across the way that was begging me to come hither. The day before, I hurt my knee, so I was not very mobile at the time.  Thankfully, KUMA was close by.  This was a place I have wanted to go to for quite some time.  Luckily, they have a new location at the Shaenfield Ranch Center at 7915 W. Loop 1604 N.  I limped over there to indulge my curiousity.

KUMA offers Hong Kong/Harajuku style ice cream desserts served in a freshly made pod waffle.  The menu at may seem complicated, but it is very simple to get a grasp on thanks to KUMA's friendly staff.  First you pick your flavor of ice cream.  Keep in mind the flavors here at KUMA are Asian popular.  Some of the choices are Matcha, Unicorn, Black Sesame, and plum wine.  I chose Matcha.  Next you choose 4 toppings. I chose green tea Pocky, almonds, chocolate wafers, and pop rocks.  Seems unusual, but trust me it is sweet bliss.  Finally you choose a sauce.  I chose caramel.  Considering the size of this dessert I ordered, its price of $7.50 is a bargain.  In Tokyo, a confection such as this would cost $10 easy.

And boy........was my creation amazing.

Here is a picture of the dessert my cousin's daughter ordered.

And yes, those are panda cookies.

For $7.50, you can get an Asian ice cream delight.  You have endless possibilities as far as toppings.  You can put fruity pebbles in your dessert.  KUMA is fun and a great place to hang out with your friends.  I guarantee you will fall in love with  KUMA.  For those wondering, KUMA is Japanese for bear.  Get yourself to KUMA and have fun.  It's Gai Dan Jai time!

Miss the MALT HOUSE? Then head head over to Hometown Burger.

When I started this blog, my first entry was about my favorite restaurant that no longer is around.  The Malt House was a special place to me.  The building was recently demolished, and a piece of San Antonio tradition was gone.  The closest burger I had tried that was remotely close to The Malt House was Burger Boy.   That was until I made my way to Hometown Burger.  A place where possibly the ghost of The Malt House lives.

Hometown Burger is a local burger joint with two locations in San Antonio.  I happened to go to the location at 7907 W Loop 1604 N.  The place is very small, but has a cozy 50's retro feel.  The booths in Hometown Burger look like they belong in a Chevy Bel-Air, and oldies of yesteryear can be heard blasted through the sound system.  The menu is small as like the menu at In and Out Burger, but Hometown Burger have more size options for their menu items.  I ordered the 2/3 lb. double classic combo with onion rings.  I also noticed they have Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs here as well.  After a 10 minute wait, I got my meal.  Nostalgia hit me upside the face.

The burger was great.  It is similar to The Pig Stands King Burger Combo as far as taste.  Perfect balance of meat, veggies, and condiments.  Very mouth-watering.  The bun is lightly toasted, and is very fresh.  I fell in love with the onion rings.  Almost made exactly like the legendary onion rings of The Malt House.  In comparison, Hometown Burger's onion rings are similar in texture and taste to the Malt House onion rings.  They were delicious.  They were great enough for me to want to come back.  It's best to order the onion rings since if you order fries, you will not be getting a good amount of them.  An order of onion rings towers over an order of fries.

The prices are fair, and the service is great.  I will definitely be coming back for more.  Will absolutely doubling my order of onion rings.  Great food with a bit of a blast from the past.  Stick around for my next post and I will let you know where I went for dessert.

Don't You Think This Pumpkin Spice Thing Has Done Got Out Of Hand?

Every November, a certain sweet spice rears its head to much fanfare across the USA.  It's return every year creates excitement amongst its biggest fans, and also many jeers from its detractors.  Pumpkin Spice has become a pop culture event that draws all kinds of emotions.  Starbucks created this phenomenon, and now it has blown up to a level that stifles most of the world.  So.......what is all the hype all about?

Pumpkin spice contains ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and allspice.  That's right, no pumpkin.  It is actually the spice that goes into pumpkin pie, which is my favorite of all.  Pumpkin spice's popularity began when the national coffeehouse chain Starbucks released a seasonal Pumpkin Spice Latte for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.  It's demand for it exploded as if it were the Tickle Me Elmo Doll that was flying off shelves in stores 22 years ago.  For the last 7 years, pumpkin spice has become a yearly tradition to millions.

In the now, pumpkin spice has crossed over into other edible items such as:  cereal, oatmeal, coffee creamer, oreo cookies, syrup, ice cream dippin' dots, candy, pet food, twinkies, tea, jello shots, pop tarts, energy bars, peanut butter, marshmallows, pancakes, pretzels, popcorn, almonds, and granola.  These items just came out this year.  I feel that pumpkin spice is getting over-exposed.  Lattes I can understand, but do I really need pumpkin spice in an energy bar? Thankfully there are no pumpkin spice energy drinks.  This over-exposure has brought on quite a bit of haters to the popular spice.  To paraphrase Waylon Jennings.....Don't you think this pumpkin spice thing has done got out of hand?

Yes it has.  I don't hate pumpkin spice, but I don't need it in everything at the supermarket.  Why do I need Pumpkin Spice Frosted Flakes?  I don't.  It's great in a beverage, but what is the sense of putting the spice in junk food?  It's a cash grab.  It is cheapening the value of how good pumpkin spice is.  I like it, but 85% of the items that claim to have pumpkin spice need to go away.  Pumpkin spice should only be in two places.....in pumpkin pie and a beverage.  Anything is a ploy to make money off of something that deserves to be a holiday tradition.  It shouldn't be a here we go again event every year.

My 5 favorite places to go eat at in NEW YORK CITY

New York City!  My kind of town.  What is there not to like about the Big Apple?  The largest city in the United States has something to offer everyone from all walks of life.  When it comes to food.....NYC is king.  Hated by those who have never been there, and loved by those who had the NYC experience.  I have been there twice, and I can't wait to get back.  I get asked all the time by friends about places to go eat at in New York City.  I'm about to give you my five favorite eateries in NYC.  All five are great.

#5

ELLEN'S STARDUST DINER

Imagine you have a hankering for some good ol' comfort food in a diner setting so you can relax and enjoy good company.  Then out of nowhere.....your waitress starts singing a classic from Beauty and the Beast.  For me, this was an awesome experience.  Ellen's Stardust Diner gives you great food and the Broadway experience in one place.  They have a singing waitstaff! The place gets packed for breakfast when many omelets are to be consumed by the Stardust faithful.  My favorite dish to eat here is the RUBY REUBEN.  It is a delicious reuben sandwich with amazing corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing on grilled rye bread.  Also get a bowl of wedding soup.  Good stuff.  If you don't like crowds, go between 1 to 4:30 PM.  Ellen's Stardust Diner is to be seen to be believed, and you will love it.

#4

JOHN'S PIZZERIA OF TIMES SQUARE

The first place I ever ate at in New York City.  The place is so chill.  The pizza here is amazing.  They use quality ingredients to make this great pizza that brings in locals and tourists alike.  The chicken fettuccine alfredo is amazing.  The plates are big.  They are very generous with their portions.  But I must tell you about their calamari.  I have had calamari in many different eateries all over this country.  John's Pizzeria has the best calamari, and the marinara sauce that accompanies it is bliss.  They have so many toppings you can choose from.  27 to be exact.  This is some bad ass pizza, and to top it off, you are in Times Square.  What more can you ask for?  I love this namesake pizzeria.  This John thinks you will love John's Pizzeria too.

#3

NATHAN'S FAMOUS CONEY ISLAND

There is not a more legendary hot dog than the one's at Nathan's Famous in Coney Island.  It's an institution you must try when in the Empire state.  I must tell you.....there are more than just hot dogs here.  They got pretzel dogs, clam chowder, fish'n chips, shrimp, chicken wraps, boneless wings, & Philly Cheesesteak.  What did I order?  Two Chili-cheese dogs, beer battered onion rings, and a large cup of Nathan's Famous amazing lemonade.  Best hot dog ever!  And it's in Coney Island where there is so much to do.  It is after all the Warrior's turf.  What I also like about Nathan's famous is that they have a huge outdoor seating area.  It's perfect for sight seeing and people watching while you eat some legendary eats.  Get on that train to Coney Island and get you you the greatest hot dog known to man.

#2

CARMINE'S ITALIAN RESTAURANT-TIMES SQUARE

I love traditional Italian food, and Carmine's is the best.  It's a classy joint with an amazing menu.  I went twice in consecutive days.  One day for their Italian sausage Ragu, then the next day for their amazing meatball which is the size of a softball.  It was a bit pricey, but Carmine's is a quality place.  You just want more after eating there.  It's almost like your Mom is the chef there.  Such a great wine list as well.  The eggplant parm  at Carmine's is a foodies dream.  Huge serving of parm that will leave you saying wow for about 10 minutes.  Trust me I know.  The star at Carmine's are the meatballs.  Made in all sizes with great spices and quality meat.  Great on any type of pasta.  If you and the family are ready for some great Southern Italian cuisine....Head over to CARMINE'S ITALIAN RESTAURANT.  There...they treat you like family.

#1

KATZ'S DELICATESSEN

There may not be a more legendary eatery in all of  New York state.  The sandwiches at Katz's are delicious as well as huge.  Whether you are choosing pastrami or corned beef, you can't lose.  The menu is great.  I have been here for all three daily meals, not in one day, but  I did the Katz's TRIFECTA.  For breakfast I had the pastrami omelet, which was amazing.  For lunch, I had their awesome matzo ball soup with the epic Katz's Hot Brisket Sandwich.  One of the best meals I have ever had.  For dinner I got the DINNER PLATTER which consists of matzo ball soup, brisket, potato pancakes, and noodle Kugel (a Jewish baked casserole).  The dinner platter is ungodly delicious.  Katz's Deli is legendary in every way.  Giant sandwiches, great soups, prepared by proud New Yorkers in a place that has historically been serving patrons since 1888.  It was an honor for me to eat there.....three times.  And there are still items on their menu I want to try.  When in New York City, get your butt to Katz's Delicatessen.  The Mecca of food in New York.

Austin Tacos Versus San Antonio Tacos

In the last few years, a taco war has ensued between the Capital City of Austin and the Alamo City San Antonio.  Barbs and exclamations have been exchanged, and the respective mayors of these cities have challenged each other in a taco cook off.  But really....which city makes the better taco?  Leave this to me.  I frequently eat tacos in Austin, and am a native of San Antonio.  In a way it is apples versus oranges, but there must be a winner.  Whose tacos reign supreme?!

Austin Tacos

Austin tacos are with out a doubt a little more experimental than those in the Alamo City.  Those who make tacos in Austin fuse different flavors from other ethnic foods to present tacos that are appealing to the eye and taste buds.  The tortilla itself in many cases is a hybrid of flavors as well.  They are delicious, yet a little pricier, Austin tacos are a culinary work of art.  It is safe to that Austin has a strong lunch and dinner taco game.  The same can not be said of their breakfast taco game.  It is lacking effort and ingenuity.  Their breakfast tacos are pretty basic.  Nothing special.  There are some good breakfast tacos in Austin, but they are far in between.  In many cases, the bean and cheese tacos in the Texas capital don't look like much.  Some of the breakfast tacos are novelties that lack in flavor.  It is safe to say that there is an imbalance in the taco game of Austin.

San Antonio Tacos

San Antonio's taco reputation is strong on the preparation of the ingredients of its tacos.  Though they are not as pretty as the tacos in Austin, Alamo City tacos are the kings of flavor.  San Antonio has given the world staples such as barbacoa and fajitas, and in taco form they are amazing.  San Antonio tacos are more traditional to Mexican cuisine in the manner of using spices and peppers that are beloved in Mexican cuisine.  Most of the tacos are smaller like Mexico's street tacos, they are packed with flavor.  Unlike Austin, San Antonio has an extremely strong breakfast taco game.  In fact, maybe the strongest breakfast taco game in the nation.  San Antonio is the #1 city in the nation in breakfast taco sales.  S.A. is also known for having great tacos at very reasonable prices.  San Antonio's taco game may be the strongest in the USA.

For it's all around taco game......SAN ANTONIO is your winner.

I urge you to try tacos in both cities.  Here are some great taco eateries in both cities:

Austin- Papalote Taco House
             Pueblo Viejo
             Juan In A Million
             Torchy's Tacos
             Tacodeli

San Antonio- Taqueria Datapoint
                       Los Ajos Mexican Grill
                       Taco Palenque
                        Ray's Drive In
                       Guero's Taco Diner
                        Roy's Taco Hut

The Top 5 HEB Food Items You Need In Your Fridge Or Pantry

In San Antonio, HEB is the dominant force in grocery.  They have a reputation for producing some of the most innovative food products in the country.  Consumers from all over the country order some of these unique items from heb.com to get their HEB fix.  Some of these items are gold.  Here are the TOP 5 HEB FOOD ITEMS YOU NEED IN YOUR FRIDGE OR PANTRY.

#5  Fresh In-Store Made Guacamole
HEB has the best store bought guacamole on the planet.  It is delicious, and is about fresh as you can get.  The ingredients come from in store, and made by an HEB employee.  It tastes amazing!  It looks and tastes like homemade guac.  You can even get it spicy in a variety of sizes.  An easy pick up for parties, get togethers, the big game, or if you are jonesing for guacamole.  The quality is always consistent, and guaranteed by HEB. It has fantastic flavor, and won't break the bank.  Go get you a tub of this avocado delight.

#4     MIXLA TORTILLAS

Let's talk innovation.  There are certain Mexican dishes that people have to have corn tortillas with.  Others prefer flour tortillas.  HEB has a tortilla that can give you both.  HEB MIXLA Tortillas is the ultimate corn/flour hybrid.  I have tried this tortilla with barbacoa, enchiladas, fajitas, pork carnitas, and ground beef.  And.......they were dynamite.  They have the flavor of corn tortillas, and are strong as flour tortillas.  You like breakfast tacos?  This is your tortilla.  They are the perfect size, and don't take long to heat up.  Corn and flour in perfect harmony.  Who knew?

#3     HEB THAT GREEN SAUCE

Made from a variety of green peppers,  HEB THAT GREEN SAUCE might just be the most versatile condiment ever made.  First impressions are that it looks a little lumpy and not too thick, but it packs phenomenal flavor.  Tastes great with all kinds meat, vegetables, chips, and of course tacos.  In my house during a get together, That Green Sauce does not last more than an hour.  It's not too spicy, so everyone can enjoy it.  Perfect for any occasion, especially TACO TUESDAY.

#2     WHATABURGER ORIGINAL AND SPICY KETCHUP

When WHATABUGER Fancy Ketchup hit the shelves at HEB, customers went nuts.  I mean it was selling out on a regular basis.  It's the king of ketchups.  For over 50 years, this ketchup has become legendary.  Now you can bring a large bottle of this iconic condiment home.  You can also get it in the spicy variety.  This ketchup has a taste that is second to none.  I have a cousin that lived in California who would come down and visit, and he would stock up on WHATABURGER FANCY KETCHUP.  He would bring home a case.  People in this state love this ketchup.  And HEB is the only place where you can get a bottle of this amazing condiment.  Take home this legend.

#1     MOOTOPIA CHOCOLATE MILK

MOOTOPIA CHOCOLATE MILK is the only HEB exclusive item that left me speechless.  It is amazing.  Super healthy and delicious, MOOTOPIA needs to be tried to be believed.  Anyone can drink it.  Those who are athletes, lactose intolerant, looking to get healthy, or just love chocolate milk should go down to HEB and grab them some of this incredible drink.  I have tried many different types of chocolate milk, but MOOTOPIA is by far the best.  It is unique in the fact that its formula is one of a kind.  In fact, HEB has a patent on the recipe for MOOTOPIA.  It's MOOTOPIA'S flavor that gives it the #1 spot.  It's healthy yet packs a wallop of flavor.  You owe it to yourself to bring home a half gallon home of MOOTOPIA.  If you have kids, buy two half gallons.  Not before I buy my two cartons.  You can thank me then.  lol

The News In Food

Though food news is considered novelty by many, it is news to me.  Some stories are odd, some are sad, and some are informative.  It is all news none the less.  So here is the recent news in food.

IHOP Unveils It's Own Beer

After a name change that seemed to go nowhere, IHOP  has surprised many consumers by introducing their own named IHops.  IHOP teamed with the KEEGAN ALES Brewing Company to bring the flavor of the restaurants pumpkin pancakes to a stout beer.  Stout beer, made famous by Guinness, is thick in body and has a selection of fruity and sweet flavors.  Curious to try it?  Hop on to ihop.com to check out where you can pick it up.  IHops Pumpkin Pancake Stout is not available at your local IHOP.

Emergency Room Visits Due to Spicy Snacks On The Rise

Spicy snacks such as Hot Cheetos, Takis, and LUCAS have grown in popularity among the 8-18 year old demographic over the last decade.  These same snacks are also responsible for a rise in emergency room hospital visits.  Patients diagnosed with gastritis are becoming more common due to the consumption of spicy snacks.  Some patients end up with ulcers after not seeking medical attention in time.  The spike in ER visits have become more prevalent in California and Texas where sales of Takis and Hot Cheetos post high sales.

BURGER BOY EARNS HONORS AS BEST BURGER IN THE COUNTRY

Since opening their second location in February of this year,  BURGER BOY has given WHATABURGER a run for its money.  It has picked up honors for its popular burgers and fries by San Antonio media.  Inside Coup, an online coupon and service reviewing website, has named BURGER BOY as having the best burgers in the country.  Whataburger earned the same honor in 2016.  This honor is huge for BURGER BOY considering they only have two locations with a third and possible food truck on the way.

BUD JONES PASSES AWAY

On a sad note, Raymond Bud Jones has passed away October 7th.  Jones opened the legendary Southside San Antonio restaurant BUD JONES in 1958 selling fish and chips.  Over the years, Jones added dishes such as chicken fried steak and other comfort foods that have given the eatery a loyal following.  He will be remembered as a kind man and the owner of the legendary restaurant that bears his name.

HAVE YOU BEEN TO THE AY PAPI'S FOOD TRUCK?  What Are You Waiting For?

Last Saturday, after putting off going for far too long, I visited a food truck owned by a friend of mine.  His wife who I have known for 27 years mentioned to me that her husband had a Puerto Rican food truck I had to try. Yes, San Antonio has a Puerto Rican Food Truck.  I ordered the Tripleta sandwich which has beef, chicken and ham as well as lettuce and tomatoes.  It was amazingly delicious.  For $10, you get a generous amount of meat on a buttered grilled roll.  I ask myself why I waited so long to come to AY PAPI'S.  After all, being a food blogger takes alot of planning when it comes to visiting eateries.  AY PAPI'S is a must for those who appreciate Latin food. AY PAPI'S Puerto Rican Cuisine is owned and operated by Hector Faberlle.  AY PAPI'S can be found in the PEP BOYS AUTO PARTS parking lot Friday through Saturday from 6 PM to 11 PM.  Great food with great customer service.  The Cuban sandwich is excellent too.

The Top 5 Foreign Sodas

In the last five years, Foreign drinks have become more popular among American consumers.  Sodas from abroad in particular are reporting record sales in due part thanks to food trucks.  Consumers are discovering that other countries have great tasting sodas.  I have tried quite a bit of them, and they have been amazing.  So, I present to you the top 5 foreign sodas.

#5  GOOMBAY PUNCH (BAHAMAS)

Named after a style of Bahamian music, Goombay Punch is a street party in a can.  It is the perfect marriage of pineapple and lemon.  It has a very high sugar content, but is delicious.  It comes in 12 oz. cans, 20 oz. bottles, and six packs of 12 oz. cans.  This soda is guaranteed to give you a smile.  The can already does.

#4   INCA KOLA  (PERU)

"The Golden Cola" is South America's best selling cream soda.   It's blend of citrus and vanilla flavors have been tantalizing taste buds since 1935.  In fact, it was developed by a British immigrant by the name of Joseph Robinson Lindley. Lindley found a way to use lemon verbena as a main ingredient into a soft drink, and the rest is history.  INCA KOLA can now be found in the U.S.  You can probably find it in your local specialty grocery store.

#3   PINK TING (JAMAICA)

Considered by many to be the world's best grapefruit soda;  Pink Ting has to be tried to be believed.  Described by many to taste like the popular candy SKITTLES, Pink Ting has a taste that is out of this world.  Pink Ting hit the Jamaican market in 1976 to a huge fanfare.  It is so popular that a Pepsi bottling plant now has the job of being the top producer of Pink Ting.  It's a great POP for all ages.  Absolutely worth a try.

#2     FENTIMANS CURIOSITY COLA (Britain)

Organic and Herbal, Fentimans Curiosity Cola is a must have for any cola lover.  Described as a botanical cola, Curiosity Cola is brewed differently than other colas.  It is brewed alot like root beer, only with alot of more natural ingredients like ginger and pear juice extract.
It does contain a tiny bit of alcohol, but it is sold as a soft drink.  It tastes great, and it is amazing in a frosty mug.  It is sure to have you saying WOW several times.

#1  MEXICAN COCA-COLA (MEXICO/NORTH AMERICA)

Did you know that Mexico is the number one consumer of Coca-Cola in the world?  It's true.  Maybe because they have the most popular soda in the world at the moment.  Mexican Coca-Cola has become a worldwide phenomenon.  It is a staple at taco trucks and taquerias everywhere.  The Coke we have in the U.S. has high fructose corn syrup, which alot of people try to avoid.  Mexican Coke has sugar cane, which gives it a richer taste.  It is bottled at the FEMSA Bottling Plant in Monterrey, Mexico, the largest bottling company in that country.  Mexican Coke is also very popular in New Zealand ans Japan.  It is the superstar of sodas at this moment.

If you are looking to try any of these great sodas, look no further than World Market.  World Market has a great selection of foreign beverages for everyone.  I go there all the time to see what is new.  You should too.

Morimoto's NEO TOKYO: How an Iron Chef created an Asian Cuisine Explosion in America

When I was very young in the 1980's, Japanese food was not readily available for dine in or carry out.  There were sushi bars in downtown San Antonio, but they were very pricey and required a reservation.  You had to drive to Houston to get your hands on Japanese cuisine.  Then something happened in 2000.  The Food Network started airing a cooking competition that originally aired in Japan called Iron Chef.  The show had chefs from all over the world challenge one of four Iron Chefs who were the best in their style of cooking. They represented French, Szechuan, Japanese, and Italian cuisine.  Once the Iron Chef was challenged, both challenger and Iron Chef were presented with an ingredient that all courses of the meal they would prepare must consist of.  Iron Chef became a instant hit.  One of the Iron Chefs in particular became very popular.  Masaharu Morimoto was the show's Iron Chef Japanese, and he became a sensation in the US.  His popularity would lead to the United States falling in love with Japanese Cuisine.  In my neck of the woods, ramen shops and Japanese grocery stores started popping up everywhere.  How did Morimoto-san create a Japanese food revolution?  He put his own spin on traditional Japanese dishes.

Morimoto's style of cooking is called Neo-Japanese.  He puts a modern spin on traditional Japanese dishes.  He took risks that looked and tasted amazing.  Iron Chef showcased his talents, which gave him a huge fan-base all over the world.  While taking on his duties as Iron Chef, Morimoto was making a living in New York City as a sushi chef.  At one time he was the head chef at the famed Nobu Japanese Restaurant.  Little did he know that what he did on Iron Chef would inspire many Americans to cook and dine on Japanese cuisine.  He became a phenomenon.  The Food Network decided to hold a special Iron Chef challenge that pinned Morimoto against popular Southwest cuisine chef Bobby Flay.  The response to the event was massive.  Tickets to the event sold out in mere minutes.  It was broadcast live, and brought huge ratings to The Food Network.  Morimoto came away the victor.

There was life after Iron Chef.  In 2001, Morimoto became a restauranter when he opened his first eatery in Philadelphia called what else, MORIMOTO.  At this time, the Iron Chef also partnered with the Rogue Ale to create Morimoto Soba Ale.  The beer went on to win a slew of awards, and continues to sell very well to this day.  Morimoto has opened 10 restaurants all over the world in cities such as Dubai, Orlando, Las Vegas, Maui, Hong Kong, and Mexico City.  Every restaurant is different.  Momosan in New York City serves delicious ramen.  Morimoto Asia has menu items from Japan, China, and other Asian countries.  It is known for its excellent Peking duck.  And in this time, Morimoto continues to pass on his knowledge of food preparation and knowledge.  He has written numerous best selling cook books, and his line of kitchen knives are popular with foodies.  I own his vegetable chopping cleaver.  Best $50 I ever spent.  He has become a recognizable brand that people love.  At 63 years of age, he has no intention of stopping.

Masaharu Morimoto reintroduced Japanese food to the masses.  His talents showcased a huge variety of dishes that other parts of the world had never seen.  These dishes then became everyday staples in eateries of Asian flavor that started to pop up everywhere.  Whether it is his handy knife work, or beautiful rolls of sushi, Morimoto is the one man who ignited the Japanese food explosion that still goes on today.  The world became enamored with him as an Iron Chef, and pay homage to his influence among foodies and chefs everywhere.  Chef Morimoto has created a dynasty that has given so much to diners.  He took risks in the kitchen that fans are in awe of to this day.  I hope one day I get to try one of his maki rolls.  So, the next time you ask why are all these Japanese restaurants are popping up;  just watch an episode of Iron Chef with Morimoto.  You will then understand why.  He is a special talent.  As a huge fan myself, I urge you to try sushi if you have never had it.  Go to a ramen bar and order a bowl of Shoyu ramen.  Visit a Japanese grocery store, and buy some takoyaki or mochi.  Masaharu Morimoto's influence can be found in all these places.  And for that.....I am grateful.
