The Top 5 HEB Food Items You Need In Your Fridge Or Pantry

In San Antonio, HEB is the dominant force in grocery.  They have a reputation for producing some of the most innovative food products in the country.  Consumers from all over the country order some of these unique items from heb.com to get their HEB fix.  Some of these items are gold.  Here are the TOP 5 HEB FOOD ITEMS YOU NEED IN YOUR FRIDGE OR PANTRY.

#5  Fresh In-Store Made Guacamole
HEB has the best store bought guacamole on the planet.  It is delicious, and is about fresh as you can get.  The ingredients come from in store, and made by an HEB employee.  It tastes amazing!  It looks and tastes like homemade guac.  You can even get it spicy in a variety of sizes.  An easy pick up for parties, get togethers, the big game, or if you are jonesing for guacamole.  The quality is always consistent, and guaranteed by HEB. It has fantastic flavor, and won't break the bank.  Go get you a tub of this avocado delight.

#4     MIXLA TORTILLAS

Let's talk innovation.  There are certain Mexican dishes that people have to have corn tortillas with.  Others prefer flour tortillas.  HEB has a tortilla that can give you both.  HEB MIXLA Tortillas is the ultimate corn/flour hybrid.  I have tried this tortilla with barbacoa, enchiladas, fajitas, pork carnitas, and ground beef.  And.......they were dynamite.  They have the flavor of corn tortillas, and are strong as flour tortillas.  You like breakfast tacos?  This is your tortilla.  They are the perfect size, and don't take long to heat up.  Corn and flour in perfect harmony.  Who knew?

#3     HEB THAT GREEN SAUCE

Made from a variety of green peppers,  HEB THAT GREEN SAUCE might just be the most versatile condiment ever made.  First impressions are that it looks a little lumpy and not too thick, but it packs phenomenal flavor.  Tastes great with all kinds meat, vegetables, chips, and of course tacos.  In my house during a get together, That Green Sauce does not last more than an hour.  It's not too spicy, so everyone can enjoy it.  Perfect for any occasion, especially TACO TUESDAY.

#2     WHATABURGER ORIGINAL AND SPICY KETCHUP

When WHATABUGER Fancy Ketchup hit the shelves at HEB, customers went nuts.  I mean it was selling out on a regular basis.  It's the king of ketchups.  For over 50 years, this ketchup has become legendary.  Now you can bring a large bottle of this iconic condiment home.  You can also get it in the spicy variety.  This ketchup has a taste that is second to none.  I have a cousin that lived in California who would come down and visit, and he would stock up on WHATABURGER FANCY KETCHUP.  He would bring home a case.  People in this state love this ketchup.  And HEB is the only place where you can get a bottle of this amazing condiment.  Take home this legend.

#1     MOOTOPIA CHOCOLATE MILK

MOOTOPIA CHOCOLATE MILK is the only HEB exclusive item that left me speechless.  It is amazing.  Super healthy and delicious, MOOTOPIA needs to be tried to be believed.  Anyone can drink it.  Those who are athletes, lactose intolerant, looking to get healthy, or just love chocolate milk should go down to HEB and grab them some of this incredible drink.  I have tried many different types of chocolate milk, but MOOTOPIA is by far the best.  It is unique in the fact that its formula is one of a kind.  In fact, HEB has a patent on the recipe for MOOTOPIA.  It's MOOTOPIA'S flavor that gives it the #1 spot.  It's healthy yet packs a wallop of flavor.  You owe it to yourself to bring home a half gallon home of MOOTOPIA.  If you have kids, buy two half gallons.  Not before I buy my two cartons.  You can thank me then.  lol

The News In Food

Though food news is considered novelty by many, it is news to me.  Some stories are odd, some are sad, and some are informative.  It is all news none the less.  So here is the recent news in food.

IHOP Unveils It's Own Beer

After a name change that seemed to go nowhere, IHOP  has surprised many consumers by introducing their own named IHops.  IHOP teamed with the KEEGAN ALES Brewing Company to bring the flavor of the restaurants pumpkin pancakes to a stout beer.  Stout beer, made famous by Guinness, is thick in body and has a selection of fruity and sweet flavors.  Curious to try it?  Hop on to ihop.com to check out where you can pick it up.  IHops Pumpkin Pancake Stout is not available at your local IHOP.

Emergency Room Visits Due to Spicy Snacks On The Rise

Spicy snacks such as Hot Cheetos, Takis, and LUCAS have grown in popularity among the 8-18 year old demographic over the last decade.  These same snacks are also responsible for a rise in emergency room hospital visits.  Patients diagnosed with gastritis are becoming more common due to the consumption of spicy snacks.  Some patients end up with ulcers after not seeking medical attention in time.  The spike in ER visits have become more prevalent in California and Texas where sales of Takis and Hot Cheetos post high sales.

BURGER BOY EARNS HONORS AS BEST BURGER IN THE COUNTRY

Since opening their second location in February of this year,  BURGER BOY has given WHATABURGER a run for its money.  It has picked up honors for its popular burgers and fries by San Antonio media.  Inside Coup, an online coupon and service reviewing website, has named BURGER BOY as having the best burgers in the country.  Whataburger earned the same honor in 2016.  This honor is huge for BURGER BOY considering they only have two locations with a third and possible food truck on the way.

BUD JONES PASSES AWAY

On a sad note, Raymond Bud Jones has passed away October 7th.  Jones opened the legendary Southside San Antonio restaurant BUD JONES in 1958 selling fish and chips.  Over the years, Jones added dishes such as chicken fried steak and other comfort foods that have given the eatery a loyal following.  He will be remembered as a kind man and the owner of the legendary restaurant that bears his name.

HAVE YOU BEEN TO THE AY PAPI'S FOOD TRUCK?  What Are You Waiting For?

Last Saturday, after putting off going for far too long, I visited a food truck owned by a friend of mine.  His wife who I have known for 27 years mentioned to me that her husband had a Puerto Rican food truck I had to try. Yes, San Antonio has a Puerto Rican Food Truck.  I ordered the Tripleta sandwich which has beef, chicken and ham as well as lettuce and tomatoes.  It was amazingly delicious.  For $10, you get a generous amount of meat on a buttered grilled roll.  I ask myself why I waited so long to come to AY PAPI'S.  After all, being a food blogger takes alot of planning when it comes to visiting eateries.  AY PAPI'S is a must for those who appreciate Latin food. AY PAPI'S Puerto Rican Cuisine is owned and operated by Hector Faberlle.  AY PAPI'S can be found in the PEP BOYS AUTO PARTS parking lot Friday through Saturday from 6 PM to 11 PM.  Great food with great customer service.  The Cuban sandwich is excellent too.

The Top 5 Foreign Sodas

In the last five years, Foreign drinks have become more popular among American consumers.  Sodas from abroad in particular are reporting record sales in due part thanks to food trucks.  Consumers are discovering that other countries have great tasting sodas.  I have tried quite a bit of them, and they have been amazing.  So, I present to you the top 5 foreign sodas.

#5  GOOMBAY PUNCH (BAHAMAS)

Named after a style of Bahamian music, Goombay Punch is a street party in a can.  It is the perfect marriage of pineapple and lemon.  It has a very high sugar content, but is delicious.  It comes in 12 oz. cans, 20 oz. bottles, and six packs of 12 oz. cans.  This soda is guaranteed to give you a smile.  The can already does.

#4   INCA KOLA  (PERU)

"The Golden Cola" is South America's best selling cream soda.   It's blend of citrus and vanilla flavors have been tantalizing taste buds since 1935.  In fact, it was developed by a British immigrant by the name of Joseph Robinson Lindley. Lindley found a way to use lemon verbena as a main ingredient into a soft drink, and the rest is history.  INCA KOLA can now be found in the U.S.  You can probably find it in your local specialty grocery store.

#3   PINK TING (JAMAICA)

Considered by many to be the world's best grapefruit soda;  Pink Ting has to be tried to be believed.  Described by many to taste like the popular candy SKITTLES, Pink Ting has a taste that is out of this world.  Pink Ting hit the Jamaican market in 1976 to a huge fanfare.  It is so popular that a Pepsi bottling plant now has the job of being the top producer of Pink Ting.  It's a great POP for all ages.  Absolutely worth a try.

#2     FENTIMANS CURIOSITY COLA (Britain)

Organic and Herbal, Fentimans Curiosity Cola is a must have for any cola lover.  Described as a botanical cola, Curiosity Cola is brewed differently than other colas.  It is brewed alot like root beer, only with alot of more natural ingredients like ginger and pear juice extract.
It does contain a tiny bit of alcohol, but it is sold as a soft drink.  It tastes great, and it is amazing in a frosty mug.  It is sure to have you saying WOW several times.

#1  MEXICAN COCA-COLA (MEXICO/NORTH AMERICA)

Did you know that Mexico is the number one consumer of Coca-Cola in the world?  It's true.  Maybe because they have the most popular soda in the world at the moment.  Mexican Coca-Cola has become a worldwide phenomenon.  It is a staple at taco trucks and taquerias everywhere.  The Coke we have in the U.S. has high fructose corn syrup, which alot of people try to avoid.  Mexican Coke has sugar cane, which gives it a richer taste.  It is bottled at the FEMSA Bottling Plant in Monterrey, Mexico, the largest bottling company in that country.  Mexican Coke is also very popular in New Zealand ans Japan.  It is the superstar of sodas at this moment.

If you are looking to try any of these great sodas, look no further than World Market.  World Market has a great selection of foreign beverages for everyone.  I go there all the time to see what is new.  You should too.

Morimoto's NEO TOKYO: How an Iron Chef created an Asian Cuisine Explosion in America

When I was very young in the 1980's, Japanese food was not readily available for dine in or carry out.  There were sushi bars in downtown San Antonio, but they were very pricey and required a reservation.  You had to drive to Houston to get your hands on Japanese cuisine.  Then something happened in 2000.  The Food Network started airing a cooking competition that originally aired in Japan called Iron Chef.  The show had chefs from all over the world challenge one of four Iron Chefs who were the best in their style of cooking. They represented French, Szechuan, Japanese, and Italian cuisine.  Once the Iron Chef was challenged, both challenger and Iron Chef were presented with an ingredient that all courses of the meal they would prepare must consist of.  Iron Chef became a instant hit.  One of the Iron Chefs in particular became very popular.  Masaharu Morimoto was the show's Iron Chef Japanese, and he became a sensation in the US.  His popularity would lead to the United States falling in love with Japanese Cuisine.  In my neck of the woods, ramen shops and Japanese grocery stores started popping up everywhere.  How did Morimoto-san create a Japanese food revolution?  He put his own spin on traditional Japanese dishes.

Morimoto's style of cooking is called Neo-Japanese.  He puts a modern spin on traditional Japanese dishes.  He took risks that looked and tasted amazing.  Iron Chef showcased his talents, which gave him a huge fan-base all over the world.  While taking on his duties as Iron Chef, Morimoto was making a living in New York City as a sushi chef.  At one time he was the head chef at the famed Nobu Japanese Restaurant.  Little did he know that what he did on Iron Chef would inspire many Americans to cook and dine on Japanese cuisine.  He became a phenomenon.  The Food Network decided to hold a special Iron Chef challenge that pinned Morimoto against popular Southwest cuisine chef Bobby Flay.  The response to the event was massive.  Tickets to the event sold out in mere minutes.  It was broadcast live, and brought huge ratings to The Food Network.  Morimoto came away the victor.

There was life after Iron Chef.  In 2001, Morimoto became a restauranter when he opened his first eatery in Philadelphia called what else, MORIMOTO.  At this time, the Iron Chef also partnered with the Rogue Ale to create Morimoto Soba Ale.  The beer went on to win a slew of awards, and continues to sell very well to this day.  Morimoto has opened 10 restaurants all over the world in cities such as Dubai, Orlando, Las Vegas, Maui, Hong Kong, and Mexico City.  Every restaurant is different.  Momosan in New York City serves delicious ramen.  Morimoto Asia has menu items from Japan, China, and other Asian countries.  It is known for its excellent Peking duck.  And in this time, Morimoto continues to pass on his knowledge of food preparation and knowledge.  He has written numerous best selling cook books, and his line of kitchen knives are popular with foodies.  I own his vegetable chopping cleaver.  Best $50 I ever spent.  He has become a recognizable brand that people love.  At 63 years of age, he has no intention of stopping.

Masaharu Morimoto reintroduced Japanese food to the masses.  His talents showcased a huge variety of dishes that other parts of the world had never seen.  These dishes then became everyday staples in eateries of Asian flavor that started to pop up everywhere.  Whether it is his handy knife work, or beautiful rolls of sushi, Morimoto is the one man who ignited the Japanese food explosion that still goes on today.  The world became enamored with him as an Iron Chef, and pay homage to his influence among foodies and chefs everywhere.  Chef Morimoto has created a dynasty that has given so much to diners.  He took risks in the kitchen that fans are in awe of to this day.  I hope one day I get to try one of his maki rolls.  So, the next time you ask why are all these Japanese restaurants are popping up;  just watch an episode of Iron Chef with Morimoto.  You will then understand why.  He is a special talent.  As a huge fan myself, I urge you to try sushi if you have never had it.  Go to a ramen bar and order a bowl of Shoyu ramen.  Visit a Japanese grocery store, and buy some takoyaki or mochi.  Masaharu Morimoto's influence can be found in all these places.  And for that.....I am grateful.

The Top 5 non-entree food items you can't say no to

We all have our favorite dishes we always turn to satisfy our hunger.  But, sometimes an appetizer or snack does the trick.  On many occasions these non-entrees are more crowd pleasing than a dish with a few sides.  Today, we look at the top 5 non-entrée food items you can't say no to.  A few you may have heard of, and others you will want to try after this countdown.  All 5 are delicious.

#5 SLIDERS

White Castle has been making them for decades, and sliders are miniature burger bliss. You can't just have one.  They have the same ingredient options as a full size burger, but sliders sometimes will have unconventional ingredients that are delicious.  Sliders are usually sold in fours, but many establishments will be more than happy to serve up the quantity you want.  Though they are small, sliders have perfectly seasoned beef.  They pack a great flavor punch.  They are fun to make as well.  The small patties and buns are easier to find at your local supermarket.  If you see them at a party or a menu, order up.

#4    NACHOS

Like the taco, you can pack nachos with a ton of ingredients.  It is the perfect party food.  You don't have to make a whole lot of cheese, and the chips are pretty inexpensive.  Nachos are a crowd pleaser, and seconds and thirds are always had when your friends notice the crock pot of nacho cheese in your kitchen.  Nachos are easy to prepare.  I like to add pork sausage and salsa to my nacho cheese.  You can try different ways of preparing nacho cheese.  You can't go wrong.  It can feed a lot of people with out breaking the bank, and the flavor  is off the charts.  Who turns down nachos?

#3  GUACAMOLE

Guacamole is highly addictive.  First off it is tasty.  It is good for your health, and you can put it on or mix it with anything.  Be warned, really good guac gets eaten fast.  Eyes get big when discovering guacamole is on the table at a party or restaurant.  If there is a bag of tortilla chips around, pass me the bowl of guacamole.  The habit around guac is that once you start dipping your chips into it, you probably will not stop.  It is super cheap to make, and will satisfy a lot of appetites.  I add tomatoes and lime to my guacamole.  I also use Mexican avocados over California ones.  Guacamole in English means Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

 #2    WINGS

There is nothing like having some wings during football season.  Wings are perfect for any occasion because they come in different flavors, and you can order as little or as many as you want.  They go great with ranch dressing or blue cheese.  Vegetables go great as a side with wings.  You can get them spicy, sweet, sour, or plain.  No matter how you like them, they are delicious.  Got some left over?  Throw them in the microwave, they come out great.  As an appetizer or even a main dish at times, wings are always a delicious great idea for a group of people or a party of one.  My favorite flavors are garlic-parmesan, Hawaiian, teriyaki, and lemon herb.  Wings rule.

Now for the entry that no one can not say no to.  It is simple yet amazing.  Comes to us by way of the Philippines.  It may not look like much, but your stomach will live in euphoria and you will want more.  A lot more.

#1    LUMPIA

I know what you are saying "It looks like an ordinary spring roll."  That is where you are wrong.  It has the texture of a spring roll, but the flavor inside is amazing.  Inside the wrap is the perfect combination of rice noodles, meat, and vegetables.  When I first tried lumpia, my eyes got big because the flavor is incredible.  You can have them with all sorts of sauces.  I made them for a party once, and they were gone in five minutes.  That's considering I made 50 of them.  Once you try lumpia, you will get hooked.  It is an appetizer you will never get tired of.  I do not know of anyone who has ever said no to lumpia.  It is perfect food.  Goes excellent with pancit as well.

What are some of the foods you can't say no to.  Leave a comment and let me know what dish always gets a yes from you.  Have a great evening, and Bon Appetit.

THE PHENOMENON THAT IS JOLLIBEE

Three years ago, I was invited to tag along on a weekend trip to Houston with my cousin Mark and his family.  His youngest daughter had a tennis tournament, and I really needed some time away from San Antonio.  Through the weekend, my cousin and his kids kept mentioning a place named Jollibee.  I had never heard of it, but my cousin's kids could not wait to get there.  I was up for something new.  I'm a foodie, this would be an experience.  And man........was I right.  The moment came to walk through its doors, and the menu just amazed me.  I can choose between burgers, noodles, fried chicken, spaghetti, and the bubble smoothies as well as a very delicious treat called halo-halo.  I decided to try the fried chicken. The three piece ChickenJoy to be exact.  It was amazing.  It had a thin and crispy crust that packed a ton of flavor.  Had a citrus flavor to it.  It was awesome.

Jollibee is a Filipino based fast food restaurant that caters to people from all walks of life.  There are 1200 Jollibee restaurants in Southeast Asia, Hong Kong,Italy, Middle East, and North America.  Here in the states, Jollibee can be found in cities with large populations of Asian people such as Houston is.  All ethnicities love this place.  It has a welcoming environment, and very friendly staff.  The dining room is very nice for being a fast food joint.  You mention Jollibee to someone who has experienced it, and you will see them light up. with glee.

Jollibee is celebrating it's 40th birthday this year.  It has become a foodie's destination for many years.  It has become a house hold name.  In fact, toy company FUNKO has released a limited edition JOLIBEE Funko Pop Vinyl Figure to commemorate the occasion.  Not bad for a global food phenom that started at an ice cream parlor in Manilla.  They have established themselves as an American favorite.  An eatery of the people.  I urge all of you to find your local Jollibee and enjoy the treats it has to offer.  My personal favorite is the Amazing Aloha Burger, which has teriyaki sauce and pineapple.   The fried chicken comes with probably the best brown gravy I have ever had. As far as fast food goes, I give JOLIBEE an A+.  Foodies from all over the world sing its praises.  I am sure once you try it, you will be singing as well.

THE ULTIMATE DINNERTIME DEATH MATCH: THE BATTLE OF LOCKHART-KREUZ Market VS BLACK'S Barbecue VS SMITTY'S Market VS CHISHOLM TRAIL

It has all come down to this.  A city with four amazing BBQ restaurants.  Lockhart, Texas is seen by many as the BBQ capital of the world.  The food in this small town is on a different high level.  Just as I, many jolly diners trek their way to Lockhart for the best BBQ around.  One question rises from many after visiting the big four BBQ joints.....who is the best?  I decided to partake in this quest very happily.  I have been to all four of these fine BBQ establishments.  You have the sibling rivalry between KREUZ MARKET and SMITTY'S MARKET.  In another corner you have the foodie popular BLACK'S BARBECUE.  Rounding off this battle is the friendly neighborhood CHISHOLM TRAIL LOCKHART BAR-BQ.  All four are great, but only one can be called the best.  Let's battle!

Each restaurant will be rated on 10 different categories.  Each category will be given a score from 1 to 10.  1 being the worst, and 10 being the best.  The BBQ joint with the highest score will be declared the winner.  Here we go!

They also offer great desserts and even deer jerky, which is delicious.   Out of  towners like myself  love this place.  As you can see, Kreuz earns high marks.

Black's Barbecue may have a small building, but that building is full of flavor.  The beef and pork ribs stand out on this delicious menu.  Black's has a ton of sides to choose from.  They make huge meat sandwiches, and that chicken is mouth watering.  Both staff and diners there are friendly, you might even see a member of the Black family cutting meat to your order.  A very delicious menu.  Kudos to Black's Barbecue.

Hands down, Smitty's Market has the best brisket.  It's a work of art.  It tastes amazing like it was custom made for bread.  The beans they make are great.  They may have the smallest meat menu, but the flavor in each item is delicious.  The tables are big, and the dining area is very relaxing.  Try the turkey.  It is mighty tasty. Great old school BBQ joint.  Go early.  Trust me on this.  Brisket is King there.

Chisholm Trail Lockhart Bar-BQ has an inviting small town feel. It also has the best sides in town.  Try the fried okra and you will see what I mean.  Their sausage has a peppery taste that will have you ordering another link.  They offer a number of different plates from their huge menu.  Your order is served with a smile, and the other diners there are just as friendly.  They are also the only BBQ joint of the big four that has a drive through.  Chisholm Trail is also the lightest on your wallet or pocket book.  A very pleasant dining experience.

It was very close, and it was not easy analyzing these four great establishments.  By a slim margin, Kreuz Market wins this Dinnertime Death Match.  They have the best all around meat menu.  It is quality that gives them victory.  All four of these great BBQ joints are worth a visit.  They are about an hour away from San Antonio, and you can get there pretty quickly using Texas Highway Toll Road 130.  If you love BBQ, get your ass to Lockhart, Texas.  If you choose to go to Smitty's Market, take cash.  What are you waiting for?  BBQ Shangri-La awaits.

My 5 Favorite Beers of All Time

I rarely ever drink anymore.  I wanted to focus on staying healthy.  But, there was a time when I was a bit of a beer snob.  I would seek out beers I only heard about to try them for myself.  I tried bad ones, and I tasted some great ones.  There were a handful of beers that were amazing.  I would bring them to parties, and my friends loved them.  So here are my top 5 beers of all time.

#5
GUINNESS

Guinness was my chill beer.  I can also drink a pint of this stout in 4 seconds, which no one should ever try.  I don't anymore.  This dry stout is thick, smooth, and helps you relax.  It has a mild and rich taste that I like.  It is also high in Iron, so it has a healthy quality that 99% of beers don't have.  It should not be drank in excess due to its thick body.  I love the taste.  There is nothing like relaxing with a pint of the ole black stuff in your hand.

#4 La Fin Du Monde

If you are used to drinking domestic beers like Coors and Budweiser, this is not the beer for you.  If you appreciate rich and distinctive beer, by all means try it.  It is strong, yet has great flavor.  This blonde strong ale from Montreal is triple fermented.  It has some bite to it, but is very enjoyable to drink.  I give the bottles to friends for birthdays, and they become fans right away.  It has a wine like taste that I appreciate.  It also goes great with a steak.  It comes in a 24 oz. bottle, so it might be smart to share with a friend.  It has won many honors for a reason.

#3

PAULANER HEFEWEIZEN

Usually only available from September through January, Paulaner Hefeweizen might just be the most flavorful beer known to man.  It has an irresistible fruit taste that you have to try to believe.  It is not heavy, and is best drunk out of a pilsner glass.  This German delight is the beer that will bring a smile to your face just because its flavor jumps out at you.  I just wish it was available year round.  It's a crowd pleaser  that will bring smiles.

#2

BODDINGTONS PUB ALE

In my opinion, Boddingtons Pub Ale is the best English beer there is.  Even out of the can, it tastes like it came right out of a keg.  It's a little strong, but smooth to the taste.  This Manchster born brew is quality beer.  It is quite refreshing for a beer that is stronger than most ales.  The spicket inside keeps the consistency of the brew satisfactory.  I love this beer.  It is readily available.  You have to try this beer.

#!

ROGUE MORIMOTO SOBA ALE

Step aside Budweiser, Rogue Morimotop Soba Ale is the true king of beers.  A multi-award winning ale, Morimoto has taken the beer business by storm.  It tastes amazing, considering it is made from rhubarb.  It also stays cold longer.  That may have to do with the chemical make up of  this brew that bears the name of Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto.  I brought Morimoto to parties, and my friends were in shock how great it was.  Not too strong, but as smooth as they come.  It is truly my favorite beer.  I truly think that Morimoto is the best beer on the market.  A true masterpiece of an ale.  Go out and buy a bottle.

Remember to drink responsibly.  Don't drink and drive.  Don't drink to excess, because if you do, you are not drinking for the flavor of the beer.  If you try any of these great beers, I suggest you do it in the confines of your own home.  Good night and be safe.

THE JOHN EATS WORLD Best of the Best 2018 pt. 1

In the seven months I have been writing this blog, I have eaten at more places than I have ever have at any point in my life.  It has been fun, and rewarding.  I want to take the time to recognize some excellent food items that have really stood out this year.  I can't state enough how great it is to be a food blogger these days.  I am having so much fun exploring food in my hometown and elsewhere. Without further ado.....here are the best of the best.

BEST BURGER
The American Kobe Beef Burger from Fuddruckers

May not look like much, but this burger tastes amazing.  The half pound kobe beef patty has the make of a really good ribeye steak, and goes with cheese in sweet harmony.  Try it with A1 steak sauce.  It costs $10, but it is well worth it.  The king of burgers in town.  Incredible taste.

BEST STEAK

16 oz. RIBEYE STEAK FROM LITTLE RED BARN

If you look up juicy steak in the dictionary, you are likely to see this steak's picture there.  It is the best steak I have ever had.  I don't even need steak sauce because it is so good.  I like mine medium-well, and it is a carnival in my mouth.  And it is served on a metal plate.  How cool is that?  Cut and grilled perfectly.  Best steak in town.

BEST MEXICAN PLATE

PARRILLADA from JALEPENOS

When you get a hot metal plate with peppers, shrimp, and fajitas you are gonna grab your fork immediately.  The shrimp is good size and marinated very well.  The fajitas are tender and mesh well with the red peppers.  It is a lot of food, but who's complaining.  Did I mention the sweet onions in this delicious mix?  One word to describe this plate......WOW!

BEST ASIAN DISH

LEMON CHICKEN from DING HOW

There are few Asian dishes in San Antonio that have the pull that Ding How's Lemon Chicken has.  It might just be the best lemon chicken in the country, or at least the best I have ever had.  It's perfect!  A great mesh of quality and quantity.  It is the only plate I order at Ding How, and I'm pretty sure I am not the only person who feels that way.  It's one of my go to eats.  So delicious.

BEST APPETIZER

CAJUN NACHOS from ACADIANA CAFE

I have been to ACADIANA CAFE many times, and the Cajun nachos were the one item on the menu I always put off only because I wasn't sure I would like it.  About 8 years ago, I finally tried them.  I am so glad I did.  They are delicious.  The concept is to put jambalaya toppings on top of tortilla chips with queso.  Delightfully great.  You have to try them.

BEST SLICE OF PIZZA

GOOMBA'S PIZZERIA

The best New York Style pizza in town.  There isn't a better slice of pizza in the 210 than GOOMBA'S.  Great balance of toppings, cheese, and sauce.  I compare every pizza I order to GOOMBA'S amazing Pepperoni and Sausage 20 inch pizza pie.  They do not disappoint.  There is no one better.  Great service as well.

BEST BUFFET

M.Y. Chock Dee Oriental Market and Restaurant

If you love Asian food, this is heaven.  Especially Filipino food.  It is a huge buffet with so many delectable entrees to choose from, and they are all delicious.  For under $10, you get enjoy lumpia, chicken adobo, and pancit.  It is over by Randolph Air Force Base, but the trip is well worth it.  I can not say enough great things about this place.  Thank you to the Edralin's for introducing this eatery to me.

BEST SIDE ITEM

THE CREAM CORN FROM RUDY'S BBQ

The cream corn from Rudy's BBQ will stop anyone in their tracks.  You can't have enough of it.  My youngest brother worked for Rudy's, and he would go with the catering team to serve at weddings and parties.  He always said the cream corn was always the first food item to run out.  You mention Rudy's to anyone, and two things come up.  Their BBQ sauce and the amazingly delicious cream corn.  I always order a quart to save for later.  It's edible gold man.

Part 2 will be coming Friday.  Look up these places and try some of these dishes.  They have my seal of approval.

Are you kidding me? Taco Bell is America's favorite Mexican restaurant!

Recently, a Harris Poll EquiTrend study declared that Taco Bell is America's favorite Mexican Restaurant.  The popular fast food franchise beat out other national brands such as Chipotle and Moe's.  How did this happen?  Like myself, many other diners are scratching their heads on why Taco Bell is number one in this study.  Don't get me wrong.  I actually like Taco Bell, but considering all of the other Mexican eateries I have been to, it is not the best.

Why was Taco Bell considered the king?  The biggest reason is that the really great Mexican restaurants are local.  They are exclusive to specific cities.  Los Angeles has Guelaguetza Restaurante.  New York City has Toloache.  Chicago has Rick Bayless' Frontera Grill.  My hometown of San Antonio has Mi Tierra.  These fine establishments have better quality dishes than Taco Bell, but have far less number of locations.  Taco Bell is everywhere.  One just opened in Tokyo.  Even the local Mom and Pop places only have one or two locations.  In the eyes of some, more locations means I can have Mexican food whenever I want.  But it is not exactly the best.

Another factor of Taco Bell being named King of the Mountain is that they are the least expensive.  You can feed an army with $20 at Taco bell.  At a quality Mexican restaurant, you will be spending a little more, and for only 2 people.  Taco Bell is also faster.  It takes about 5 minutes to get an average order at the bell.  The items themselves are not complex by any means, but you won't be waiting 20 minutes while munching on chips and salsa.  When we all go to a great Mexican Restaurant, it is as if we have all the time in the world.  At Taco Bell, you are there a half hour at most.

Taco Bell is also innovative.  The local favorite restaurants have dishes that are unique in a traditional way, but Taco Bell thinks outside the box.  Their line of Doritos crunchy tacos is fantastic.  The Nacho Fries are simple, but really good.  Their take on breakfast has become really popular without the need of traditional Latin breakfast entrees.  The Bell is brave when when it comes to bringing the masses something new.  They are masters at peaking the interests of their customers.  I remember going nuts when they brought EXTREME NACHOS to the world.  In my hometown, Roy's Tacos has huge breakfast tacos, but they have the same ingredients their smaller versions have.  Taco Bell comes up big in originality.

Taco Bell is in no means a 5 star restaurant, but they do alot of things right for a fast food Mexican eatery.  I have had great Mexican food in my travels, but places like Palominos #2 in San Diego or La Azteca in Atlanta are not around the corner.  Taco Bell is.  It may not be the quality you seek, but it is light on your wallet.  They are a global brand, but not many Mexican eateries are.  Who do I think is the best Mexican Restaurant in America?  I have to go with La Margaritas in Market Square in San Antonio.  Their menu is a culinary masterpiece.  Just ask ZZ TOP.

The Top 5 people I would like to interview for this blog

JOHN EATS WORLD has become popular in my hometown of San Antonio.  I am always looking to expand this blog into something much bigger.  Eventually, I will be interviewing some famous people in the food business.  There are many people I would love to interview, so I thought I would show my loyal viewers MY TOP 5 DREAM INTERVIEWS.  By the way, I have a huge interview coming up.

#5

RACHAEL RAY

Aside from being my celebrity crush during my college days, Rachael Ray has a vast insight on being a chef and a diner.  She wowed audiences by showing her viewers how to score 3 meals for $40 a day in certain cities.  Her charming personality won an army of fans.  She was the girl next door that could whip up a mean bowl of pasta.  She now has a talk show, and she cooks some of the most delicious entrees going today.  And she has not changed a bit.  She is as nice as they come.

#4

MARTIN YAN

A true icon of Chinese cuisine, Martin Yan has amazed his loyal viewers since 1982 on his award winning cooking show YAN CAN COOK.  He understands both the fundamentals and science behind Chinese cuisine.  He is a great teacher of his craft, and has written many best selling cook books.  He is known for his over the top kind personality that has made him a legend among celebrity chefs.  Interviewing him would be so much fun, and his anecdotes would be awesome.

#3

RICK BAYLESS

As my Grandma Rosa used to say, "That gringo knows how to cook Mexican!"  That is an understatement.  Chef Bayless is this country's best traditional Mexican  cuisine culinary artist.  He travels through every inch of Mexico to hone his craft, and take him the flavors he discovers to his fine dining restaurants in the U.S.  He is a very nice guy, and is always looking to pass his knowledge on to aspiring chefs.  And yes he is the younger brother of sports journalist SKIP BAYLESS.  He is a true historian of Mexican food, so picking his brain in an interview would be cool.

#2

Emeril Lagasse

Emeril Lagasse is the King of  New Orleans.  If you know me, I love Cajun and French cuisine.  Emeril is our country's best at both.   He is super social, and is often considered America's favorite chef.  An interview with him would be inspirational for anyone looking to study the culinary arts.  His cooking style is often imitated, but never duplicated.  Just to hear his trademark BAM would be epic.  He is a frtanchise, so he could provide insight on how a chef or food blogger can get themselves noticed.  Who doesn't love this guy?

AND NOW FOR

#1

MASAHARU MORIMOTO

When it it comes to cooking, Masaharu Morimoto is my hero.  I would have so much to ask him.  What was it like to be Head Chef at the legendary Nobu restaurant?  What does Rokusaburo Michiba, the God of Japanese cuisine, mean to you?  Where did you get the idea to brew your own award winning beer.  This man brought Neo-Japanese cuisine to the masses.  He was easily the most popular IRON CHEF when the Japanese show ran regularly on the Food Network.  He captured the imagination of foodies everywhere with his amazing culinary creations.  He was and still is a PHENOM.  It would be an honor to interview Morimoto-San.

I can only hope to get these interviews, but one can dream.  Big things are coming for my blog, so say tuned.  Shiawasena shokuji!

Legendary Menu Item: 3 Piece Fried Chicken from the now closed MALTHOUSE

About a month ago, the building that was my favorite restaurant The Malthouse was demolished.  A sad day for many in the westside of San Antonio.  Their menu had many great food items, but one particular item got alot of attention.  The Malthouse may have had the largest pieces of fried chicken in the United States.  Twice the size of what you would get at a national franchise.  The 3 Piece Fried Chicken Plate from The Malthouse was a legendary menu item.

In a menu with Fatboy Burgers, Un Poquito de Todo Mexican platters, and some of the best onion rings in the world; the fried chicken at The Malthouse would get you through the door by word of mouth.  The chicken is often referred to as "fried chicken on steroids" because of the size of the pieces.  Large in size, but very delicious.  Considered by many food critics as some of the best fried chicken in Texas.  And for $5.99, it was a bargain and a half.  In most cases, it took 2 people to finish this plate.  Along with the behemoth chicken, you get a hearty serving of mashed potatoes with brown gravy.  The gravy at the Malthouse was great.  In my times dining at The Malthouse, other patrons there referred to the fried chicken plate as "My Usual."  It sold so well, It was painted on the front window of the restaurant.  I had tried it many times, and it was amazing.

As I said, The Malthouse is gone.  I will always remember all great times I had there.  I tried everything on the menu, and they were delicious.  To this day, the 3 piece fried chicken plate is legend.  The Malthouse will be missed.  We need to help out the Mom and Pop neighborhood restaurants so they can stay open.  Make time to get a burger from the Pig Stand, the chicken fried steak from Tip Top Cafe, or the amazing seafood from Gulfo de Mexico.  Some of the best food can be found at the local gems around town.  Long live THE MALTHOUSE!
